A large-scale search and rescue effort is actively under way in the Caribbean waters for a pair of unlocated sailboats carrying humanitarian supplies en route from Mexico to the island of Cuba.

Naval Search Efforts Deployed

Mexico has sent naval teams and military search aircraft to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting no fewer than nine total personnel, per a navy statement.

The boats had been expected to arrive in the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their docking, the statement clarified.

Context of Humanitarian Support to Cuba

The island nation has relied heavily on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the nation grapples with repeated power outages across the country.

"The captains and crews are experienced sailors, and each boat are equipped with appropriate navigational gear and signalling equipment," an official associated with the mission said.

The nine individuals on board are nationals of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Officials said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.

"Our team is collaborating completely with the officials and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.

Previous Humanitarian Mission

Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and warmly received a different ship that had delivered 14 tons of relief supplies to the nation.

That ship, nicknamed "a modern Granma" after the yacht in which Castro landed in Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, brought photovoltaic panels, medicines, formula milk, cycles and foodstuffs.

Broader Political Climate

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded attempts to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a oil sanctions on the island nation came into effect.

International organizations have since warned of ""severe" shortages of supplies, with in excess of fifty thousand operations postponed in Cuba due to energy rationing.

Foreign policy measures have been ramped up lately, with remarks from different officials emphasizing the complex situation regarding diplomatic ties.

Responding to previous comments, a prominent Cuban official stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Reports suggest that initial phases of discussions commenced, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.

The maritime authorities said it was committed to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to locate the vessels and ensure the safety of the people on board.

At this time, there has been no public statement on the lost ships by the Cuban government.
