The ice cream brand's Co-Founder Alleges Parent Company Blocked Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Product
One of the original creators of the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated that corporate owner Unilever stopped the introduction of an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, who established the company with Jerry Greenfield, disclosed how he plans to independently develop the controversial product as part of an individual series highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking out about.
Longstanding Dispute Between Founders and Corporate Owner
This latest development intensifies the continuing conflict among the world-famous dessert company with its corporate parent, the British packaged goods giant that has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.
Both founders have asserted how Unilever along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming an Emblem for Solidarity
The entrepreneur announced via social media how he is creating a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas for the product's name and additional components.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder declared in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol for support for the Palestinian people due to its colors, which closely resemble the colors in the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Historical Social Engagement plus Current Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in territories occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company transferring their Israel business over to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
The new dessert series is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand which was first created in 2016 for endorsing former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Shifts plus Future Plans
The founder stated that he plans to develop additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues that the company was silenced from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at the company in September, after decades with the organization, citing concerns that its independence had been compromised after corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen stated that “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
"My heart compels me to continue to work inside the company to fight for its independence so that it can fulfill the social mission, the values that established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
