The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Sees Major Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
