During the bulk of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned within a psychic prison built from the past of Henry Creel. Their quest for a way out in episode 6 leads them to experience a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—a moment that potentially carries the key to defeating him permanently.

The Discovery in the Mine Shaft

When she finds Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a viewing device found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. By aligning her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

In this place, they observe a child version of Henry encounter an man who is hurt and scared. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. To protect himself, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the act wasn't just a simple act of survival.

In keeping with mysteries of the final season, the truth about the mine shaft incident originates in the live show The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission

*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a plane later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the captain, who emerged in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to hand over to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their version of the tests. The man in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.

Unlocking the Mystery

Considering what is known about his research, the briefcase would assuredly have some of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would later pass on to the kids in Hawkins Lab.

Alternatively, the container could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. The prequel shows that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he battles the control of a malevolent force, similar to how Will Byers was influenced by the entity in the past.

A Weaponized Emotion

Henry's enduring terror linked to that memory shows how utterly horrifying the incident was for him. Even as he commands the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to become stronger.

His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a key upper hand in the endgame conflict ahead.
