Fighters chuckle as they move on the back of a transport truck, racing alongside a line of multiple dead bodies and heading facing the descending Sudanese evening sky.

"See such effort. Look at this act of genocide," one shouts.

The individual grins as he points the camera on his own face and his fellow combatants, their paramilitary badges clearly shown: "These people shall all perish like this."

The combatants are exulting in a massacre that aid workers suspect killed over thousands of individuals in the Sudanese metropolis of al-Fashir last month.

A Community Cut Off from the Outside

After maintaining the urban area under blockade for approximately 24 months, from August the militia moved to consolidate its dominance and restrict the surviving civilian population.

Space-based imagery show that fighters began to construct a enormous berm - a built-up dirt embankment - encircling the boundaries of the city, sealing off roads and halting relief supplies.

As the siege escalated, 78 people were murdered in an militia attack on a religious building on 19 September, while the UN stated 53 more were killed in aerial and heavy weapon attacks on a displacement camp in October.
