Nicolas Sarkozy Preparing to Release Jail Diary Chronicling Two Dozen Days Incarcerated

The ex-president of France is preparing a memoir this autumn titled Notes from a Cell, which recounts his experience endured behind bars.

This news was made less than two weeks after Sarkozy was released while he contests the court ruling on charges of criminal conspiracy regarding a scheme to obtain political financing provided by the leadership of former Libyan leader.

Life Behind Bars: Inner Thoughts

“Inside jail one sees little, and nothing to do,” he reflects in one passage, indicating the account is more about his thoughts during seclusion rather than a broader observation regarding the packed and troubled French prison system.

“Silence escapes me, which doesn’t exist in La Santé, where one hears a lot to hear,” he continues. “The racket unfortunately never stops. However, akin to empty spaces, inner life is fortified while incarcerated.”

Court Appearance: Recounting the Hardship

While appealing for release, the former leader was present remotely from his cell, characterizing his incarceration as exhausting. He expressed in court: “I wish to commend those working in the jail, displaying remarkable compassion, and who have made this difficult experience manageable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“I didn’t expect that in my seventies, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s an ordeal that has been imposed on me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, it’s very hard. It affects one every inmate due to its intensity.”

Historical Context

The former president, the ex-head of state from 2007 to 2012, became the inaugural ex-leader in the European Union and the initial post-WWII figure of France to be incarcerated.

Ahead of his incarceration he declared he intended to spend the period for authoring a memoir.

Books in Prison

It remains unclear whether he had time to review and analyze the volumes he brought with him: a two-volume biography of Jesus plus the novel by Dumas The Count of Monte Cristo, where an innocent man is imprisoned then breaks out to exact retribution.

Daily Reality

The former leader was placed in isolation for his own security in a cell of about nine sq metres including private facilities in the Paris jail in the city. Security personnel were stationed in a neighbouring cell.

Sources mentioned that he consumed solely dairy snacks during his stay because he feared prison cuisine might have been spat on. Options were available for self-catering but refused this, according to reports. It is uncertain if the memoir includes what he ate in prison.

Legal Perspective

The legal representative, who saw him regularly every day while he was in prison, informed the court his safety would improve outside jail compared to inside. “He received threats against his life, has heard screaming after dark and emergency responses next door during an inmate’s self-injury.”

Charges and Sentence

Sarkozy went to prison in late October following a Paris court gave him a half-decade term on conspiracy charges over a scheme to secure campaign funds for his presidential bid.

He denies wrongdoing and is contesting the ruling, and another court case set for early next year.
