Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”
Authorities shared surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be an important component of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a practice session on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
