Ghostface OG Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters next year, and it is gearing up for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This new chapter marks the legendary return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters returning to the fray.
"Coming back to a role you portrayed in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard admits.
A Triumphant Return for Fallen Favorites
It has been established that a trio of distinct characters from past films are set to return in this latest sequel, despite dying in previous installments. The precise method of their return is still unclear. Audiences should prepare for the return of the beloved and nearly unkillable cop Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and third film killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Iconic Status
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the franchise for the first time since a brief appearance is a long-held wish, though he is terrified about the audience response. The performer clearly remembers the precise instant he got the news from the series creator.
"I remember the phone call. I remember the pleasantries. I recall him posing the question. That moment is permanently etched on my mind," he says. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has attained iconic status in the decades since the original film premiered, which made Lillard feeling very nervous.
"The reality is, that's a part that lives in infamy, like it or not," he notes. "A character that is now represented in each and every Scream mask that walks around every Halloween."
The Fear of Disappointing the Fandom
Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is in the same position as everyone else to see the final product. He admits to feeling significant anxiety about hoping not to be the one who ruins the beloved series.
"The outcome is either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I have no idea if the movie's be successful. I don't know if people want to see me. I've certainly seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the franchise. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Theories and Excitement Run High
While many dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return remains. Perhaps they live rent-free in Sidney's mind, similar to a prior storyline. Or, perhaps they are somehow still living in a strange shared situation. The chance of a self-referential narrative, inspired by classic genre films, also exists.
Moviegoers will discover the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
