Democrats Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated fury after Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and asserted they should be detained and punished "by death" following their publication of a controversial video.
The Message That Provoked the Dispute
The video footage, released on earlier this week, includes six Democratic congress members who in the past served in military or security positions.
"Like us, you all swore an vow to defend and support this founding document," the representatives declared in the short video. "At present, the dangers to our constitution are not only from abroad, but from right here at home. Our statutes are explicit, you can reject illegal orders, you can reject unlawful commands, you must refuse improper directives. No one has to carry out orders that break the law or our founding principles."
The Former President's Angry Reply
The video message reportedly provoke a furious reply from the previous commander-in-chief.
On later in the week, Trump posted on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate post, he stated: "This represents really serious, and Harmful to our United States. Their comments cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Representatives React
Following Trump's comments on that day, House Democratic leader released a unified announcement censuring the statements.
"Political violence has no role in this nation," they stated. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all worked our country with great national pride and excellence. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous calls for execution against congressional representatives, and call on Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in touch with security officials "to guarantee the protection of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must right away take down these unhinged social media posts and withdraw his aggressive discourse before he causes harm," the statement stated.
Lawmakers' Firm Answer
The officials who participated in the video also published a response.
"We identify as former service members and national security professionals who love this United States and swore an oath to safeguard and uphold the national charter of the United States," they stated. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we intend to honor it. No intimidation, intimidation, or incitement will deter us from that sacred duty."
"What's most telling is that the former president views it subject to penalty by execution for us to repeat the legal requirements," they continued. "Military personnel should understand that we have their support as they carry out their pledge to the national charter and responsibility to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."
They added: "The entire nation must come together and censure the president's demands for our execution and political violence. This is a time for ethical certainty."
Additional Partisan Reactions
The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's comments and posted on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is calling for the execution of government members."
He added: "This is an direct THREAT. All senators, every Representative, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should condemn this without delay and unconditionally."
The Republican House speaker justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have important representatives of Congress telling troops to defy commands, I think that represents historic in the nation's past."
The GOP official also reportedly told journalists that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the violation of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to analyze the wording and determine all that."
Executive Branch Response
During a White House press conference on later that day, when questioned by a reporter, "Does the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson responded: "Absolutely not."
"Let's be clear about what the former president is reacting to," the representative declared. "You have current representatives of the American legislature who worked together to orchestrate a digital communication to individuals of the American armed forces, to current military personnel urging them to ignore the commander in chief's legal commands."
She said: "The sanctity of our armed forces depends on the hierarchy, and if that structure is violated, it can result in people getting killed, it can lead to disorder, and precisely what these congressional representatives ... are essentially promoting."
