Christantus Uche Ignites Dominant Crystal Palace Win at Shelbourne.
Even though embarking on their maiden continental adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting at a rapid pace. Without key figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a commanding win that virtually guarantees them a place in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further victory in their next fixture against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to seal straight entry to the knockout stages, particularly after a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Moment
This occasion offered a platform for some of Palace's fringe talent to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning after arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a well-taken finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a second, finding the net for the second game in succession.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their domestic season were no match against a mostly rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were already weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg problems.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close soon after, fizzing a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the official dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker didn't need to wait long to get his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's effort had hit the post.
The home side were clinging on for dear life. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for two robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Game
The contest was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of comically weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring with his first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the traveling side.
