California is Fully Free of Drought for the First Time in 25 Years.

For the first time in 25 years, no portion of California is facing dryness. This landmark event comes on the heels of grueling years marked by insufficient rainfall that worsened fire dangers and challenged its enormous farming industry.

A Map Reveals An Absence of Dryness

The latest assessment from the national drought tracker illustrated that all of California is without dry or drought conditions. This change was driven by weeks of above-normal rainfall that replenished water storage sites like Shasta and Oroville far beyond their long-term norms.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve only known in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” remarked a local meteorologist.

From Intense Storms to Rainy Seasons

Achieving this status featured severe and lethal winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, leading to extensive inundation, blackouts, and fatalities. Even though those events started to mitigate the drought, they did not eliminate it.

Even into late December, pockets like the state's northeast corner were deemed abnormally dry. Substantial precipitation at the start of the new year eliminated those remaining dry spots.

The Vital Sierra Snow Remains a Concern

Yet, hydrologists note that being out of drought is not the same as being out of the woods. Recent measurements of the high-elevation snow place it at only about 70% of the typical level.

This snowpack, which provides approximately 30% of the state's usable water as it melts in the spring, is a critical factor for future water availability. Hydrology managers point out that it is too early to determine the outlook for the coming year.

“The current pattern right now is more rain than snow,” said a California water official. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to improve by April 1st so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”

While the drought map is entirely green, the focus now shifts to sustaining this hard-won hydrological health for the rest of the year.
