American flight controllers are more and more seeking additional employment and calling in sick, as they remain on duty without pay during the federal closure, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official informed a news outlet on the weekend, as certain aircraft were halted on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

After the government shut down on October 1st, flight controllers, who are considered essential workers, were instructed to keep doing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been missing, leading terminals to stop or slow their flight operations, which has added to setbacks due to weather and additional factors.

More than 3,000 US flights were delayed on Sunday, and the secretary said he expects the situation to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the pressure," he remarked in an discussion on a weekend program, noting that he had spoken to multiple professionals to listen to their worries firsthand.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I work for Uber, am I able to find an alternative of income to cover expenses?'" he added.

Duffy added that on the previous day 22 alerts at airports indicated flights would be held up due to a shortage of employees - one of the highest since the closure started.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on Sunday, making it the second-longest halt in history.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the quantity of aircraft in the sky if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his conversation, he would not answer directly when asked if it was safe to travel by air in the US, and instead issued a direct appeal to controllers.

"I need my controllers concentrating on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at their households," the official stated.

On Sunday, certain flights were grounded at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, leading to interruption at the fifth most active airport in the country and among the most crowded in the world, as well as additional travel extending upward to the metropolis of Oakland.

The FAA alert was issued at 8:45 AM in the morning on Sunday. Many flights were operating normally by midday.

Flights at Newark Airport, though, were delayed an average of 82 minutes due to personnel issues, and the FAA said DFW, the second most active airfield in the country, could experience difficulties from low staffing in the afternoon.

The agency advised passengers in California to check with carriers about revised departure times.

The issue comes ahead of Game 3 of the World Series, which is scheduled in Los Angeles on Monday night, and about one month before the Thanksgiving break, among the peak periods to fly in the US.

Pressure on American aviation helped end a government shutdown in 2019. At the time, the shutdown had entered its fifth week and affected airline operations, including pilot training.

It led a number of flight controllers to stay home on the identical date on 25 January 2019, temporarily stopping travel at New York's LaGuardia airport.

That same day, the former president, who at the time was in his first term as president, agreed to sign a temporary funding measure, bringing an end to the government shutdown after thirty-five days.
